    Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

A highlight of many Uganda journeys: encountering mountain gorillas in their natural environment.

Gorilla trekking is one of the most memorable experiences for many Uganda travelers. SafariUganda integrates this experience into individually planned Uganda round trips and private safaris.

    A Signature Uganda Safari Experience

For many travelers, meeting mountain gorillas is one of the most moving highlights of a Uganda journey. The experience takes place in the wild and always depends on the movement of the gorillas, the terrain and the conditions of the day.

Where Gorilla Trekking Takes Place in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both protected areas are in southwestern Uganda and are among the key habitats for mountain gorillas.

    How Gorilla Trekking Works

The duration of a gorilla tracking experience can vary. Often, guides and trackers are able to locate the gorillas within 1–2 hours. Sometimes it can take 4–5 hours, and sometimes only around 30 minutes.

The search usually begins from the gorillas’ previous location. From there, guides and trackers follow signs and sleeping nests to locate the current position of the gorilla group.

Before the tracking begins, the guide explains important behavior rules. Then the walk starts, until visitors may suddenly find themselves close to these remarkable animals.

    Behavior Around the Gorillas

Meeting mountain gorillas requires calmness, respect and attention to the instructions of the guides. Visitors follow the behavior rules given by the park guides so that the animals remain protected and the encounter is responsible.

    How Mountain Gorillas Live

Mountain gorillas do not live alone, but in stable groups. A group can include only a few animals or several dozen. It is usually led by a silverback, the adult male of the group.

Gorillas feed mainly on plants, with many different plant species and some insects forming part of their diet.

Silverbacks can become very large and powerful. Despite their strength, they are not aggressive without reason. They mainly react when they feel that they or their group are threatened.

Integrating Gorilla Trekking Into Your Uganda Safari

SafariUganda combines gorilla trekking with individually planned Uganda round trips. Depending on your travel duration, the experience can be integrated into an 8-, 10- or 14-day Uganda tour.

"A dream came true. We have just returned from our 16-day Uganda vacation and are still completely blown away. A perfectly organized tour, wonderfully selected lodges (often with beautiful views of nature), delicious food - everything was top notch. Many thanks to Mr. Pirani and his team. The encounter with the mountain gorillas was simply indescribable, but also the walking safaris with rhinos and giraffes, chimpanzees in the Kyambora Gorge and the boat trip on the Kazinga Channel were incredibly beautiful. In particular, however, our guide Jones made the trip a dream vacation. With his hum..."

"Our 10-day trip through Uganda in early March was beautiful. We were lucky with the weather and had great wildlife sightings, sunshine during chimpanzee trekking and gorilla trekking! A big thank you to Peter, who is an excellent guide. We were able to learn a lot of new things about the country and its people, the Big Five, and rare birds! That was perfect. The organization was great, we liked the lodges, and the meals were plentiful. We will be talking about this unforgettable trip for a long time to come!"

"We came to Uganda to experience the mountain gorillas up close. What we actually experienced, we would never have expected in any way. We were overwhelmed by the landscape, the diversity of the wildlife, and especially the sheer number of animals. The accommodations were chosen in a perfect mix of luxury and good standard. We particularly liked the location of the lodges with their respective views. Your tip to add an extra night at the Mihingo Lodge was great. We would particularly like to highlight our guide Ronnie – he was simply fantastic. He made this trip an unforgettable experience for ..."
